The Flucks
The Flucks are a jewish family in Eastern Pennsylvania. They are not wealthy but happy with their life. Their entire family lives in the area. Nan and Albert were teenage sweethearts before they got married in 1925 when they started a life of their own down the street from their parents and other brothers and sisters. They have two children Lillian and John who are running around the town. Nan and Albert have bought some new conviences that have been invented in the nineteen twenties and even have a car. Things are going pretty well. so nan and albert told lillian and john that they were going to their vacation home at lake erie. they didnt know what was about to happen. a week later while flucks were enjoying picnicing by the lake the world came to a crushings hult. back home the stock market had crashed. albert had some of his most of his money in the banks he only took out thrity dollars for vacation. but they didnt get word of the stock market crash until they got home.
On their way home they notices a run on one of the local banks but did not realize what was really going on. Nan was starting to get worried and she asked albert to pull over and ask someone what was going on. they saw their neighbor bill who was in a panic at the bank trying to get his money out. albert asked him "what seems to be the problem here bill?"
bill said "havent you heard, the stock market crashed, the bank has gone broke!" Nan and Albert looked at each other and just started crying because albert worked at the bank and they both invested all of their money in sears and roebuck stocks. immediately both of the children looked at their parents in dispair because they do not know what is to come.
Shortly after this event Albert was laied off at the bank and was forced to sell their car back for some money but they didnt get much. now they only had 75 dollars. when peopple were rioting out side the banks, meny people that knew albert were starting to blame him and other bank members for the bank closeing and the money problems. even at school lillian and john were getting picked on. Nan and Albert realized that the money wasn't going to last and that they would have to find work, quick. Albert's sister lives in Philadaplhia, told Albert that there was work in a factory. They decided that they had to move. The kids were extremely upset about leaving their friends and community. The Flucks moved from Bangor to the city to live with Albert's sister. they find a job at apex hosiery company. they are quickly employed because Nan knew one of the workers from the WPA who directed them there. after a few weeks of getting paid and things were looking up until the company ran out of money and had to shut down. also what they didnt knot know the rent was not getting paid and then they got kicked out . so the flucks and alberts sister marg were forced to moved to the slums and live in a shack. even worst lillian has contracted tb while working at the factory.
one day one of the wealthest business men bumped into albert while he was carring lillian to find the doctor.
Albert bumps into the man and says"im so sorry sir my daughter has tb and is very ill and needs a doctor right away."
J.D. Waterworth says"o no its ok i have a personal doctor at my estate and its close to here and im on my way home now."
so albert takes lillian to this man's home where she is treated an nourished. The man asks albert if their was anything he could do for him, he knew by looking at their appearance they were living in the slums. Albert at first says no, just like any other man but then he breaks down crying and begs the men to help in anyway he can. J.D. agree he asks him how many people he lives with, Albert tells him that there are three others. J.D. scratches his scruffy chin and then exclaims "splendid I've been looking to employ some new subordinates, I have quarters just outside for your family."
Albert in joy said "That would be unbelievable, My family and I would greatly appreciate it."
J.d. said "this isn't permanent but it will just be until you get back on your feet."
Thus begun the turn of good fortunes for the Flucks.
because of the help from mirster wellworth they all got good jobs except for john who was finishing school.
so finally the flucks had rebounded and perchuesed a row home in a section of southern philadelphia.
at this point it was 1939 and things were starting to look up for the u.s., the new deal program had worked so far. as soon as something good wsa going for the flucks they had got word of what had happend in poland and about adolf hitler and his plans for the jews. they new that a world war would eventually happen. two years later albert got his old job back at a bank where they live now with the same position and nan works as a receptionist aty the local high school where lillian attends. at this time the draft was going on and johnny was selected to go to world world II. now their only worry in the world is johnny.
