The Dillons 1928
The Dillon family lives in New York City, the father Bill works for a bank and is making a good living. The robust stock market has convinced him to invest his savings in stocks. He has made a tremendous amount of money so far and in order to strike it rich. He has borrowed money from the bank he works at and invested that as well. He bought a new house, car and just got married to a daughter of a well to do Manhattan family. Things could not be better for Bill Dillon. Irving Fisher stated in 1929, "The nation is marching along a permanently high plateau of proseperity." The Yale economist was correct at the time of his statement. No longer than a week had passed since Bill began to borrow money from the bank to invest in the stocks: The stock market then crashed soon after, and Bill's life was beginning to become a tragic story of loss and regret... Bill's wife, Margaret, had some disheartening news for Bill: She had been keeping her pregnancy a secret for 7 months now, and Bill was about to have a daughter born into a family with no money. The house was put up for eviction soon after the news of their daughter was sprung upon Bill and his tragic story. Their home was now the Buick that Bill had just purchased. It didn't seem like a "happy ending" was within reach. Bill began to become so paranoid that any man that may have walked by his car, he questioned their reason for being there. Everybody was the enemy to Bill Dillon. Somebody was always after Bill. He was always weary of someone staring at his wife of maybe stealing his car. One cold night with no blankets to sleep with Bill sold the gas in his car for a New York Times newspaper, to see if there was an end in sight of this horrid situation, and he thought that the sports section was quite a cozy blanket. While upset over his living conditions or lack there of he came across a section in the paper advertising the Public Works Administraion and there plan to spend 3,300,000,000 on varies public works projects. Bill went to sleep somewhat satisfied over the possiblity of a job in the near future. Soon there after his daughter Maggie was born into this world. Bill had a small build but had to do construction for the government under the PWA. And Bills helps build hospitals, schools, and shelters in the area. Since Bill helped build one of the shelters he was given the opputunity to live in the shelter in whichhe was given food, housing, and some peace of mind. All was going up for Bill. Not to long after Bill had saved enough money to buy a small apartment in Manhatten. On September 1, 1939 Bill had heard on his new radio that there was a war over in Europe. Bill thought nothing of the matter being that the skirmish was across the Atlantic ocean the problem would be resovled quickly. However he was proven wrong on December 7, 1941 when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, and was frightened that history was about to repeat itself. World War II was about to begin.
